EPA's National Building Competition

Manatee County BCC has entered the 2015 Energy Star Battle of the Buildings: Team Challenge which begins on July 22nd. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hosts this battle and it is the largest competition of its kind in the nation. Teams compete to see who can reduce their energy use the most, on a percentage basis, between calendar years 2014 and 2015. A “team” is a group of 5 or more buildings designated and will earn national recognition and receive technical assistance and resources that contribute to improving the environment while saving on energy costs. Manatee County has entered three teams into the competition; our libraries, downtown buildings, and buildings that are EnergyStar or close to qualifying EnergyStar buildings. As part of the challenge, teams that reduce their average energy use the most during the remaining months of 2015 will greatly impact results. What this means to you is that you need to do your part to consume less energy. Turn off those lights even when you leave the office for a meeting or if you are out to lunch. Share printers and turn off computers at the end of the day! A good motto is to Shut it Down!
