MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Dec. 1, 2015) – David Simpson, a Manatee County Area Transit driver for the past 18 years, delivered a moving speech today when he was honored before County Commissioners as Manatee County’s 2015 Employee of the Year. Coworkers and Commissioners praised David as a man of character who treats everyone with kindness and respect.

“I'd like to give honor to and thank God for giving me the ability to do this job and the health and strength for me to do it for so long,” Simpson said, later thanking a host of coworkers and his family. “Thanks to my wife who’s been with me through thick and thin. I’m so grateful to have my son here. He truly is my hero.”

David accepted the award surrounded by his wife of 45 years, Sherrye and their son U.S. Army Sgt. Keith Simpson, who has served in active combat areas around the world during his 18 years in the military.

“David a gentleman and it is a privilege to work with him,” said Public Works Director Ron Schulhofer, adding that David is also Manatee’s Ambassador of the Year since he delivers such a positive presence to thousands of MCAT passengers each year.

For the past 17 years David has driven the Route 8 bus that serves Oneco. He has worked for Manatee County since 1997. MCAT Division Manager Bill Steele noted that David also recently won the Operator of the Year Award at the Florida Public Transit Association awards. He said David is a true leader who co-workers look up to.

MCAT Operation Chief Kevin Hoyt nominated David for Employee of the Month earlier this year, noting the driver’s exceptional customer service. Simpson’s attitude, and his love for his job and his customers were what distinguished him from 11 other Employees of the Month who were considered for the yearly award.

“He greets his passengers with a smile when they board and wishes them a good day when they leave his bus,” Hoyt said in the nomination. “David is well liked and respected by his passengers, coworkers and staff. He has demonstrated a caring and compassionate spirit that sets a good example for others to follow. His attention to detail, professional appearance, safe driving record and courteous manner are unsurpassed.”

As part of the award, Commissioners read a proclamation in David’s honor and named Dec. 1, 2015 as David Simpson Day in Manatee County. He was the March 2015 Employee of the Month.
