Photo contest winners announced Saturday at Valentine House

MANATEE COUNTY, FL (March 31, 2015) – An array of beautiful local photography from around Manatee County’s natural preserves will be revealed Saturday when Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department announces the winners to its recent photo contest.

 The Grand Opening of the Photography Challenge Gallery Show will be at Robinson Preserve’s Valentine House on Saturday, April 4, from 5 -7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Cary Catts, Education and Volunteer Specialist, said the department plans to host the contest every year. One hundred local photographers submitted almost 700 photos for consideration. A panel of four Parks and Natural Resources staff members judged the entries and, according to Melissa Nell, the department’s Programming, Education and Volunteer Division manager, it was “extremely difficult to select each winner.”

“The sheer volume and quality of photographs we received was absolutely incredible,” Nell said. “We spent hours trying to decide and a final agreement was provided by Department Director, Charlie Hunsicker. After viewing all of the photo submissions, it is absolutely clear that Manatee County is one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

The contest, announced in January, challenged amateur photographers to send up to 10 photos in the following categories:

Landscape – Photos that display the habitats found within Manatee County’s natural preserves;

Wildlife – Photos that feature a particular plant or animal found within Manatee’s preserves;

People – Photos that display people enjoying Manatee’s preserves.

The winning selections will be featured in a slideshow available on the County website and social media pages. Some photos will also be considered for the County’s annual wall calendar that’s distributed throughout the area.
