Brown had been executive director at the Humane Society of Pinellas since 2011. Prior to that job, she worked with animal rescue groups in New York City. For five years beginning in 2005 she was part of the senior management team for the Animal Care and Control of New York City, one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the country, taking in approximately 30,000 animals each year. She holds a Bachelor of Journalism – Public Relations from Ohio State University and a Master of Public Administration from Walden University in Minneapolis.

Brown, who has a cat and three dogs, said she has owned rescue animals for most of her life. She called her new position with Animal Services an exciting opportunity to work with an entire community toward No Kill goals.

“I loved working in a No Kill shelter in the past, Brown said. “I’m really big on community support. One shelter can’t become No Kill on their own. Seeing the challenge of working with all of the animal shelters in the area and doing something great for the animals in the area was a great opportunity for me.”

Bob Smith said Brown’s hire comes after a nationwide recruitment and an interview period during December.

“With her strong background in animal care and welfare, we are truly excited to bring Sarah onboard,” Smith said. “Her hands-on experience working in many of the roles and positions found in most shelters, including the role of shelter volunteer, combined with her leadership and management experience will be very valuable as we continue to improve our operations in Animal Services.”
